When I find myself biting my nails thinking about what to do next, I grab my camera and take some random pics. Of anything. But lately I must say I’m back in love with my cookbooks. Not that this kind of love ever diminishes that much, but some books are better cared for than others.
I cannot tell you how easy this is to make. I will not even call it a recipe, because frankly it’s not. One morning I needed some cheering up. It was raining
of course and I, like everyone else on this little island, was having a bad day. The rain would not stop. The town centre was completely flooded. After a while I stopped reading the papers; I just couldn’t take any more bad news. Thankfully, fingers crossed, the rain has now stopped and Spring is almost here. You can imagine the joy!
I have already posted one set of photos taken at Chartwell last year. These are the second set taken on our second visit, right before the holidays. Going to that delightful place on that sunny morning was not really planned. J and I decided to go for a walk around the area, which is very very pretty. But apart from having to walk through a particularly muddy stretch of road (something I don’t like at all), my back just caved in. Knowing there was another couple of miles to go, I decided to stop at Chartwell to rest. We had our lunch there and J went on. This is what was right in front of us while munching away…
I had my camera with me so he knew I would enjoy the rest of the afternoon anyway, and I cherish some alone time once in a while. The place reminded me a little of Rivendell…
These are just some practice shots. I am not quite into these sort of landscape-y type photos, but sometimes it’s nice to be able to stretch myself a little bit. And the place is beautiful anyway, and taking no pics would have been such a waste. They are not food-related but I do hope you enjoy them as much as I did.
When making something with chocolate sauce or ganache I always end up with leftovers. Usually chocoholics like myself don’t complain about this you might say, and you would be right I guess. I don’t melt chocolate and cream often purely because of this reason. I have yet to encounter a recipe that doesn’t leave me with a container load of the stuff.
So it was no news that over Christmas I also had some leftover pastry dough from my mince pie recipe and plenty of that good dark choco. I was too tired to Google for ideas, so I just used a cookie cutter to form a few pastry discs and just dunked them in that lovely molten chocolate sauce. They turned out well. Originally I wanted to leave half of each biscuit uncovered, but there was too much chocolate and not enough pastry. So this is what I ended up with.
No regrets there!
I hope you are all doing well. Thankfully I feel awake this morning, and I guess it’s all due to one important thing: a good night’s sleep. I haven’t slept so well in ages due to some back problems, which have eased slightly during the last 24 hours. Sleeping a full 8 hours can only be a fleeting thought for me; it basically never happens, but last night I found myself nodding off at 9! It seemed so easy – I just closed my eyes and I think I was asleep in no time at all. As I said, this doesn’t happen often but when it does I relish it. Perhaps that’s why I appreciate it so much. I woke up at 6, which makes it…what?…9 hours? Absolutely fantastic! *Dancing to Pharrell Williams’ Happy* Nice.
And now I need this…
…and this, of course!
Even though I am happy to buy a hot drink from chains, I find it more pleasing when I stumble upon an independent coffee shop. This is what happened on two recent trips to London – a place where you can find anything. The coffees in the pictures were the result of two happy but separate coincidences. The first one was after an enjoyable meal at an Italian place near Leicester Square; the second was from a shop around Oxford Circus – one of the few places who actually give you a glass of tap water with your coffee. It’s such a simple thing but everyone should do this.
and I’m so ashamed, I don’t even know where the last photo was from (I wouldn’t even dare to guess) but I would devour one right this very minute! I am now off to make myself some porridge. I am being good.
Enjoy the weekend folks!
